Mary Waters | ACMHC

Therapist Pronouns: she/her/hers

Mary believes the client is the most valuable and powerful tool in the healing process. Therefore, she takes a collaborative approach where both therapist and client are seen as equals in their humanity and have unique strengths they bring to the therapeutic space. Mary is compassionate and non-judgmental; she feels it is imperative to create a space of empowerment and safety.

Mary has worked with clients through the processing of past or current trauma, grief, inter-relationship issues such as interpersonal violence (emotional, physical, and sexual abuse), codependency, marriage or partner problems, separation and divorce, parenting, sexual concerns, self-esteem, perfectionism, identity questions, and life transitions.

Mary specializes in faith concerns, including those who have experienced religious trauma, those working through a faith crisis or transition, or shifts in faith or religious affiliation. She is looking forward to working with people on their faith journey, from those wishing to stay in their current faith to those transitioning into a post-faith identity.

As a therapist, Mary specializes in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). With IFS, clients access and heal wounded parts of themselves, fostering self-awareness, emotional regulation, and personal growth. Through ACT, individuals are assisted in developing psychological flexibility and resilience, enabling them to process burdensome thoughts and feelings while taking actions aligned with their values and goals. By integrating these modalities, clients embark on transformative journeys of self-discovery, healing, and creating a more meaningful life amidst challenges.

Mary is passionate about working with those in marginalized populations who have endured discrimination due to the unequal power dynamics across economic, political, social, and cultural dimensions, particularly women, racial, religious, and cultural minorities, and LGBTQIA+ folx.

Mary is an Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselor in Utah
